William J. Carlton is senior vice president investments and senior institutional consultant with Smith Barney in McLean, VA. Jeff has been in the financial industry since 1982 and was recently recognized by Virginia Business Magazine’s Winner’s Circle as being one of the top financial consultants in Virginia. Jeff is a graduate of James Madison University where he received his Bachelor of Business. He also has the designation of Certified Investment Management Analyst (CIMA), which he received from The Wharton School of Business.
Gloria Chambers is currently a stay-at-home mom who dedicates herself to a variety of volunteer endeavors in her spare time. She is a former teacher with experience teaching high school biology and second grade. She received a B.A. with a concentration in biology from the College of Notre Dame and an M.A. in elementary education with a concentration in bilingual education from Chatham College. Gloria has served as a Board member at Langley since 2004, and currently serves as chair of the Capital Campaign and the Advancement Committee. In addition, she is an active member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, volunteers as a CCF teacher, and serves on the Associates Board of the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts.
John Clarke is a regional partner and vice president with Elm Street Development, a regional real estate development firm headquartered in McLean, VA. He graduated from Harvard Business School with an M.B.A. and the University of Illinois with a B.S. in mechanical engineering. He currently serves as president of the Maryland National Capital Building Industry Association.
Aki Debayo-Doherty is the CEO of Hammatan, an international telecommunications and financial advisory services consultancy based in Tyson’s Corner, VA, with branch offices in London and Lagos. He was formerly president of Teligent International where he formed international joint ventures in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain, Argentina, Hong Kong, Japan, and Korea. Aki previously held senior management positions at Cable & Wireless in the United Kingdom and the U.S., and started his career at Sprint Corporation in New York. He has a B.A. in biology from Hofstra University and completed graduate studies in biochemistry at Columbia University.
Susan DeSanti is senior counsel to the Antitrust Modernization Commission, where she is preparing the Commission’s report to Congress and the President. Over the previous 15 years, she served in a variety of policymaking positions at the Federal Trade Commission, overseeing hearings and developing reports on topics as diverse as competition and patents, business-to-business electronic marketplaces, and retail electricity deregulation. Previously, Susan was a partner with Hogan & Hartson in Washington, DC. At Langley, she has been a room parent and trip planner, and has been involved with the Fall Fair, auction, Middle School drama productions, and the strategic planning process that led to Langley’s current strategic plan.
Richard T. Ewing, Jr. is the head of Norwood School in Bethesda, MD, a position he has held for 23 years. He is a graduate of Yale University and earned a doctorate from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He has had experience serving on the boards of several area independent schools and local and national educational associations.
Karen Hendrixson (Vice Chair/Treasurer) is a policy analyst and macroeconomist specializing in African economic development. A magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa graduate in politics from Brandeis University, she has also studied international relations at the London School of Economics and holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in international development from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. She currently works as an independent consultant for the World Bank, and was a recipient of a World Bank “Good Practice” award in 2005. In addition to serving on Langley’s Board, Karen has twice been a room representative, chaired the Room Reps and Trip Planners Committee, was a Girl Scout co-leader for five years, and served on the Lower School Strategic Planning Committee.
Jeffrey T. Hsu (Secretary) is an intellectual property litigator with the international law firm of Heller Ehrman LLP. Before becoming an attorney, Jeff received his Ph.D. in geological sciences from Cornell University and worked for the international division of a major U.S. oil company.
Frank Marvin (Chair), a Langley alum, is the managing member of an investment consortium working on entrepreneurial ventures from his home office. He received B.B.A. degrees in accounting and finance from James Madison University and a law degree from the University of Virginia. He started his career practicing law for Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue, Tenenbaum & Associates and Trammell Crow Company. He then started and built numerous companies including SSDI, a call center company that was later sold to public company SITEL, and took three U.S. technology companies to the Japanese marketplace. In his most recent corporate experience, Frank worked at AOL where he led the deal teams for the advertising, marketing, and operations groups. At Langley, he has chaired the Advancement Committee, Sherman Arts Center Capital Campaign, and Annual Fund Drive. He has also worked on the school’s Sherman Arts Center Design Subcommittee, the Fine Arts Center Strategic Planning Committee, and the Physical Facilities Committee.
William J. McDonald is the executive vice president for brand management at Capital One Financial and is responsible for leading Capital One’s brand strategy, advertising, consumer research, client engagements, and direct marketing creative throughout North America and internationally. With more than 28 years of brand management and marketing experience, Bill previously worked at PepsiCo, where he progressed from assistant brand manager to senior vice president, and at Boston Chicken, Inc. as executive vice president and chief marketing officer. In 2004, he was named one of Advertising Age's Top 50 Marketers. Bill, who joined Langley’s Board during the 2006-2007 school year, earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration from the University of Texas.
Caren DeWitt Merrick is a partner with Bibury Partners, an early-stage investment fund. She co-founded enterprise software company, webMethods, Inc. As vice president of marketing, she helped the company grow from a basement start-up into a worldwide, publicly traded company with annual revenues of $200 million. With a passion for community investment, she co-founded and served as chairman of the webMethods Foundation, which made over 50 grants to nonprofits that help low-income families in the areas of housing, education, and healthcare. At Langley, Caren has been a room representative, co-chair of the 2006-2007 Annual Fund, and a weekly library volunteer. With a B.A. in political science from the University of California, Los Angeles, she served on the board of Inova Health Care Services and is an Advisory Board member of CharityWorks.
Gregory Parseghian is the founder and chief executive officer of Parseghian Investment Advisors, LLC, and the managing director of Spectrum Financial, LLC. He is the former chief executive officer and president of the Freddie Mac Corporation, an entity that finances one in every six American homes. Prior to being elected to this position, Greg was executive vice president and chief investment officer responsible for the firm’s $700 billion retained mortgage portfolio. He graduated from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania with a B.S. in economics, summa cum laude, and an M.B.A. in finance. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts and on the Executive Committee of the Armenian Church Endowment Fund, and has been a member of Langley’s Board since the 2005-2006 academic year.
Rita T. Roy is the president of Astute Technology, an e-learning technology company. She concurrently holds an assistant research professorship in biochemistry and molecular biology at The George Washington University Medical Center. Prior to joining Astute Technology, Rita co-founded and served as president of Medical Consumer Media, a healthcare communications company. She graduated from The George Washington University with honors in philosophy and zoology before receiving her M.S. in biology with honors from GWU. Rita is a board member for the Children’s Museum of Northern Virginia, the Community Advisory Board for the Junior League of Northern Virginia, and the Programs Board for Operation Smile.
Leslie Sarasin, Esq., is president and chief executive officer of the American Frozen Food Institute (AFFI) in McLean, a position she has held since 1999. She first joined AFFI in 1989 as director of government relations and staff counsel and has held several other positions within the organization. With a B.A. in economics from Smith College and a law degree from the University of San Diego, Leslie is a member of the American Bar Association and is admitted to practice law in the state of California and the District of Columbia. She serves on the Board of Directors of the Texas Mexico Frozen Food Council, the Produce for Better Health Foundation, and the National Chamber Foundation and as a board member and treasurer of the U.S. Former Members of Congress Auxiliary.
Carrie Towbes is a licensed clinical psychologist with a practice in Reston, VA, that focuses on children and their families. Carrie consults to several area preschools and has special interests in learning disabilities, attention deficits, and anxiety issues. She also has an M.Ed. in special education and a B.S. in elementary education. She previously taught third- through fifth-grade students with behavioral and learning difficulties in a special education center in Maryland.
Tae-Sik Yoon is the chief financial officer of the J.E. Robert Companies, including affiliates JER Partners and JER Investors Trust Inc. Previously, Tae-Sik was an investment banker at Morgan Stanley & Co. as well as an attorney at the law firm of Williams & Connolly. A graduate of the Johns Hopkins University and Harvard Law School, he has also served as the chair of Langley's Finance Committee.
