In September 2008, The Langley School launched our new strategic plan, “Developing 21st Century Learners.” Built on the foundation established by our previous plan, “Bold Steps,” this new plan provides a roadmap that will lead to an even more innovative and cutting-edge Langley education that will stay with our students long after they leave our campus.

With the last stage of “Bold Steps” clearly in view in the fall of 2006, the Board of Trustees made it a priority to engage in strategic planning to clearly define the directions for the curriculum and our campus, while maintaining the close-knit nature of our community. As the first step in the process, the school retained Dr. William Weary, a highly regarded educational consultant, who conducted a comprehensive external review of the school in spring 2007.

During the external review, Dr. Weary examined school materials, surveyed the campus and facilities, interviewed students, faculty, staff, parents, and Board of Trustees members, and reviewed relevant external data. This external review set the stage for retreats for the Board, faculty and staff, and the community held in the spring and fall of 2007, in which the strengths and weaknesses, needs of the students and community, and larger educational and societal trends facing the school were raised, discussed, debated, considered, and ultimately distilled into sets of proposed priorities.

Based on the data from the external review and the views and ideas from the retreats, the Strategic Planning Committee – consisting of faculty, staff, and Board members – reviewed the material and set forth those ideas in a final plan that has become “Developing 21st Century Learners.”

This nearly two-year-long process has been a collaborative effort. We would like to thank the entire Langley community for contributing their time, passion, and intelligence in shaping the school’s future. While the plan is ambitious and articulates foreseeable challenges, it will enable Langley to continue providing our students with the kind of education that they need, and the kind of education that will prepare them for their futures.
