Middle School

With small class sizes, ample student leadership opportunities, and a wide variety of subject areas to explore, Langley’s Middle School provides an environment that nurtures the intellectual, social, and emotional development of students in grades 6-8.

A rigorous academic curriculum of language arts, math, science, social studies, modern language, and fine arts challenges students to become independent, curious thinkers. Whether debating a political issue, performing a role in a drama production, or reciting a piece of poetry, our Middle School students are poised, self-confident, and able to express their opinions.

Energetic faculty members are specialists in their fields, engaging students with a variety of creative lessons and focusing on the individual development of each student. An advisory program pairs 10-12 students with a faculty advisor, offering opportunities to bond as a group, take field trips, and perform community service projects together.

In addition to the core subject areas, students select electives in which to participate four days a week. Band, dance, newspaper, yearbook, robotics, fitness, music appreciation, and Langley TV in our state-of-the-art media studio are just a few of the many options available. Middle Schoolers may also join one of Langley’s interscholastic athletic teams which compete against other local schools in the Capital Athletic Conference. Team sports include soccer, basketball, lacrosse, and softball. Students can also participate in an annual cross country meet in the fall and a track and field meet in the spring.

Frequent field trips throughout the year enhance the curriculum and give students hands-on learning opportunities. In the fall, students take overnight field trips to Philadelphia/Delaware (seventh grade) and Williamsburg (eighth grade). All Middle School students enjoy extended field trips in the spring: sixth-graders participate in outdoor adventures at a camp in Maryland, seventh-graders enjoy hiking and caving in West Virginia, and eighth-graders finish up their year with a trip to Assateague, VA.

Community service also plays a key role in the Middle School experience. Whether serving breakfast at a local soup kitchen, collecting bicycles to donate to an international organization, or working at area food banks, students learn the importance of helping others while developing a sense of responsibility and compassion. In addition, students gain strong leadership skills through the Student Council and Big Friends/Little Buddies program (which pairs eighth-graders with kindergartners).

Students leave Langley as well-rounded individuals, ready to face the challenges of high school and beyond. Langley provides counseling to eighth-grade students and their parents throughout the high school selection process. Click here for a listing of schools our graduates have attended in recent years.
