Your Dollars at Work

As a direct result of the nearly $700,000 raised during Langley’s 2006-2007 Annual Fund, the school was able to fund a number of educational resources, campus improvements, and faculty professional development opportunities. Here are some examples of how your Annual Fund contributions have been put to work:

Technology Improvements

  • Additional computer workstations were installed in the library, giving more students the opportunity to research subjects online and access the library’s database.
  • ProACTIV interactive whiteboards were installed in some Lower and Middle School classrooms. This technology gives teachers the ability to quickly assess students’ understanding of the material being presented.
  • The entire campus went wireless.

Faculty Professional Development

  • Several Lower and Primary School faculty attended a “Responsive Classroom” week-long summer institute where they learned practical strategies for improving students’ academic and social skills and classroom management.
  • Our director of resource and counseling attended a Harvard-sponsored “Learning Differences Conference” and shared with faculty methods of individualizing the teaching process to meet the needs of a wide range of learners.
  • The school’s director of academics attended a NAIS/Harvard Graduate School of Education “Leading Independent Schools in the 21st Century Conference.” Her insights into effective learning environments of tomorrow will help guide us through the school’s mid-term (five-year) VAIS accreditation review in the fall of 2007.

Instructional Materials

  • Percussion instruments were purchased for the Primary School.
  • New social studies textbooks and math materials were purchased for the Middle School.
  • New textbooks and workbooks were purchased for fifth-grade science.
  • Students in first and second grades received new reading workbooks and study materials.

Campus Improvements

  • The gravel parking lot next to the Solomon Athletic Center was reconfigured and regraded to provide additional critical parking spaces.
  • A permanent walkway between the American Legion parking lot and Langley was built, making this passageway safer for parents and children alike.
  • One of the most heavily used rooms on campus, the Lower School Assembly Room, received new carpet.
