Lower School

Small, flexible instruction groups at each grade level allow teachers to differentiate instruction according to each child’s strengths and capabilities, while learning specialists, math specialists, reading specialists, and counselors support students’ academic and social-emotional growth.

Classes with a STEAM specialist in grades 1-2 and lab work in our state-of-the-art science labs with a science specialist in grades 3-5 prepare students to delve deeper into these subjects every year.

Formal drama instruction starts in fourth grade and all fourth- and fifth-grade students learn to play a band or string instrument, strengthening their musical fluency and appreciation, along with self-expression and performance skills.

Langley’s Student Support Services team, including math, reading, and learning specialists and counselors, helps teachers meet every student’s needs, from extra support to greater challenge and extension work.

Carefully integrated learning technologies in every subject – including a 1:1 iPad program for grades 1-2 and a 1:1 Chromebook program for grades 3-5 – ensure students employ technology both thoughtfully and appropriately.

Learning opportunities outside the classroom, through frequent field trips and workshops with visiting authors and artists, expand every child’s capacity to apply learning to the wider world. 

Student-led service learning projects and the fifth-grade Service Learning Committee engage and enhance students’ compassion, social awareness, and leadership.

Public-speaking opportunities at every grade level – including assemblies and performances – gradually expand students’ verbal, social, and leadership abilities.

Special leadership roles for fifth-graders, including being a buddy to a first-grader, leading assemblies, going on an overnight camping trip, performing in a musical, and playing on junior varsity sports teams, prepare them for a confident transition to Middle School. Class rotations, advisory groups, and dedicated gathering spaces for fifth-graders get students ready for the excitement, responsibility, and challenge of life as a Middle Schooler.
