Seventh-Graders Take Part in Mock Trials

On March 10, the entire seventh grade put their debate, research, and public-speaking skills to use when they visited the United States Circuit Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces where they participated in two mock trials.

Judge Jamie Baker, a Langley parent, presided over the trials which included Cavanaugh v. Cup of Joe: the "spilled coffee case" and Perez v. Dempsey: the "concussion case." Students took part in the day's events as either a lawyer, witness, or juror. Prior to the trip, they practiced delivering trial-style oral arguments and witness examinations.

The mock trials served as a hands-on introduction to the class' current unit on government, providing students with basic knowledge of our governmental structures and how our legal system works.
