Eighth-graders displayed their understanding of the design thinking process through their culminating capstone project presentations. During a collaborative unit across science, art, and design classes, students worked individually or in teams to explore real-world sustainability issues. They selected challenges in food and agriculture, health and medicine, or energy, with each tied to a specific global or local context. After conducting in-depth research, they applied empathy-driven design thinking to define their problem and propose an innovative solution. Each student or team created a poster, prepared a pitch, and built a 3-D model to share their sustainable solution. Throughout the unit, students combined creativity, collaboration, and craftsmanship as they tackled real-world problems, ranging from ending the hunger crisis in South Sudan to turning plants into clean water to AI’s energy impact in Ashburn.
