Students build and test a robot

In design class, fifth-grade students are exploring robotics and engineering using the VEX IQ system. After spending multiple classes building their BaseBots together, teams took on the “Square Dance” challenge by programming their robots to move autonomously in a square. Students quickly discovered that robots don’t always turn a perfect 90 degrees, so they tested, adjusted, and improved their code through trial and error. Working in teams as programmers, mechanics, and team managers, students documented their progress in digital engineering notebooks while practicing collaboration and problem-solving.
