On October 21, Langley and PALS were thrilled to host the executive director of Let Grow, Andrea Keith. Andrea met with students in grades 5-7, as well as our Lower School advisors to the head, to discuss the importance of independence and the links between independence, confidence, and resilience. Students engaged in thoughtful discussions about areas in their lives where they would like to gain more independence, as well as the reasons why parents might be hesitant to allow them to complete tasks independently. Andrea also met with faculty to discuss Langley’s partnership with Let Grow as a Lighthouse School, and the ways we will continue to partner with parents to help increase childhood independence at home and at school. Lastly, Andrea led an informative evening session for parents, sharing the ways in which childhood independence has decreased over the past several decades, along with tools and strategies for all of us to nurture self-reliance, confidence, and self-esteem in our students.
