Student plants flowers

In honor of Earth Day and their efforts to support native plants and pollinators, second-graders practiced their gardening skills while beautifying Langley's campus during their annual Spring Planting Day. To prepare, students learned about plant adaptations in STEAM class, and the stratification and germination of native plants. They examined the adaptations that plants have in different biomes and looked at the plants that grow around Langley. Students used a flower guide to choose a species that would thrive in Langley's garden, taking into consideration the sunlight and water needs, as well as height and size restrictions. The class also potted a snap pea seed in their self-decorated pots to take home, and participated in the repotting of native plants for their plant sales in support of Fairfax Parks and the World Wildlife Fund for pollinators.
